A series of dark events occur around the home, including the death of Hugh Crain’s wife (the man who built the home). She died in a carriage crash and never spent any time in the home. Years passed, Dr. Montague explained, and the house passed from Hugh to his eldest daughter’s caretaker, a woman who (after being harassed by the locals) hanged herself. Dr. Montague explains to the other three characters and to the reader, that the house is eighty years old and was originally designed in the shape of a confusing, circular maze. The layout of the home is one of the reasons that the many events that take place there are so terrifying.

The Haunting ( – The Test of Time

In this version, the industrialist Hugh Crain financed the construction of Hill House in the 1860’s. The house was a beautiful but forbidding mansion where Crain hoped to house a wife and children. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and the narrative implies that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. Eleanor realizes that she can hear any sound that occurs inside the house, no matter which room she is in.

Twenty-six years later, the Crain siblings and their estranged father reunite after tragedy strikes again, and they are all forced to confront how their time in Hill House had affected each of them. It’s not good enough to be, well, good, and not bad enough to fall under our awfully good banner. It’s regrettably boring and a frustrating watch to see good actors fall flat with a script that takes a great idea and story and does its best to scuttle the whole thing. The Haunting doesn’t need further study to show it falls short of standing the Test of Time.

Dr. Montague later publishes his study, but his colleagues ridicule his findings. Mrs. Montague, a parapsychologist, arrives at Hill House with her friend, Arthur. Belittling her husband and his lack of progress, she confidently declares that she will draw out Hill House’s spirits.

The House feels like another character, a sort of omnipotent force controlling and dominating the entire book. Everything that happens, every interaction or spooky event brings you back to the house. I never even considered there being a ghost in the house, rather everything that happens feels like a byproduct OF the House itself.

That’s what stood out inside the actual plot and world of the movie but if you are looking at the production or non-story elements, we have a few. Remakes weren’t as big as they would get in the years that immediately followed but it wasn’t uncommon either. 1990 gave us the Tom Savini directed remake of Night of the Living Dead and the year before this movie came out, we were gifted? We would get a much more popular quasi-remake in 1999 with Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy. In line with mentioning that movie, the effects on The Mummy still hold up but here they look worse today than they did when they premiered. This isn’t uncommon as most CGI of the time was sketchy to make work well and most of it has not aged in a positive manner.

This genre has been around since the late 18th century and is still popular today. The two men arrive next, and Dr. Montague seems less than excited to reveal the reality of the house they’re staying in. He knows they will feel even worse about the time they’ve committed to staying there, and he doesn’t want them bailing out of his experiment. In 2015, Anthony Neilson prepared a new stage adaptation for Sonia Friedman and Hammer for production at the Liverpool Playhouse. Towards the end of the novel, it is becoming clear to the characters that the house is beginning to possess Eleanor. Fearing for her safety, Dr. Montague and Luke declare that she must leave.

The group fears Eleanor’s presence in the house while also fearing for her safety. They urge her to leave the house, but she doesn’t want to; with her mother dead, she has no one to go to and no other home. Eleanor herself worries that something is going on in the house that she can’t control and that she may be tapping into some of the house’s darkest elements without meaning to. She even hears her mother’s voice at one point and tries to find its source. The Netflix adaptation of the book is created by Mike Flanagan. It is loosely based on the 1959 novel and the first season consists of ten episodes.
